About the project
Originally composed by David Lang, The Public Domain was reimagined in Hanover as a participatory choral event that brought together five choirs from across the city. Designed for people of all ages and backgrounds - with no prior musical experience required - the project invited participants to explore the idea of community through sound and movement.
For the Hanover performance, the original English text was translated into German and expanded with reflections specific to the city, gathered during collaborative workshops with the singers. Over two months, the groups rehearsed weekly before coming together for the final event. The movement concept was developed by Felix Schrödinger, who also introduced the use of sign language to ensure inclusivity and accessibility. His work, in close collaboration with the musical director and dramaturge, shaped a vibrant, public experience in which individual voices converged into a shared artistic moment.
Rather than a conventional concert, The Public Domain in Hanover became a living, breathing expression of what it means to belong.
